The light in Provence attracts artists and photographers because of its harmony. For many it is the irresistible epitome of France where the sensuous inducements of warmth, food and wine, and visual splendor become an overwhelming invitation. No wonder it spawned A Year in Provence, no wonder it has always attracted visual artists, no wonder it has always attracted the rich and famous and all those who have always wished to "go to the south of France."
We will stay in a concentrated area to enjoy the area distilled to its purest essence as we pursue our mission of photography. We begin in Marseille and then drive north to St. Remy, staying in a hotel which not only hosts a photography gallery but also offers us the opportunity to make use of its fully equipped multi-station B&W darkrooms. St. Remy is a small old town contained within a circle of boulevards; it is beautiful place that gives the feeling of being completely unspoiled. Using St. Remy as a base for several days, We'll photograph the immediate area, an area often painted by Impressionists (Starry, Starry Night; Sunflowers by Van Gogh). We'll photograph in the immaculately preserved medieval town Avignon, surrounded by an ancient wall within which are winding streets, beautiful avenues, and the fabulous Palace of the Popes. We'll photograph the landmark Roman bridges and aqueducts. We'll photograph the outdoor food and antique markets of L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue. And then We'll move to the ancient Roman City of Arles, to the Roman Theater, arena, and other monuments that are a constant reminder of fleeting time. Here again there is the feeling of art being a religion, for this is the town of the Impressionists (Cafe at Night). Narrow streets and ancient buildings and a countryside palette of Cézanne colors will tempt your camera at every instant. We'll spend our last nights in Aix, a stunningly beautiful place, with wonderfully colorful markets, beautifully preserved architecture, and one of the most famous "boulevards" of cafes in France. All the elements for beautiful photography, including an English-speaking local photographer/guide who will demonstrate Polaroid transfers and bookbinding.
