Germany is not just the cold, efficient, industrial giant with huge manufacturing facilities supporting the European boom; at its heart it has been a source of artistic creativity in music, literature, and the arts. There are certain places that still embody that spirit, that seem not to have changed since the 1850s. The cross-timbered and highly decorated gasthouses and 'stubes are still there if you know where to look. The winding streets and even the ompah bands that can no longer be found in the modern cities can be found in hidden villages. If you wished you could have photographed when photography had just begun, this is your opportunity. The castles, the city walls, the narrow streets, the town squares, even the friendly atmosphere are virtually the same as they have been since before the turn of the last century. We will be staying and photographing in small villages hidden along the Rhine and Mosel rivers and along the historic Roman road.
Certain places at certain times of the year embody the archetype of a whole season. In Germany and Austria, especially in the cities of Salzburg, Munich, Nurnberg, and Rothenberg, the idea of Christmas celebrations presents itself as nowhere else. Here entire towns throw themselves into decorating their town squares and holding special art and handicraft markets. Music from the great German composersBach, Beethoven, Mozartis everywhere. Not only does Kris Kringle seem to be hiding just around the corner, but photographic images seem to jump out and grab you. Joyful children, happy adults, colored lights, decorated buildings, fantastic Christmas treesthese and other themes will please your camera. The opportunity to shop and shoot, shoot and shop, will satisfy your families. The chance to travel to Europe at a time of some of the cheapest airfares of the year will satisfy your budget.
