For Greece, our tour will be unique: we will not be following the cruise liners, we won't visit Mykonos or Santorini, our group will be small, we will be photographically oriented, and we will be seeking photographs of people as well as landmarks. We will be in Greece for the fabulous celebration of Greek Orthodox Easter with its parades and candlelight ceremonies.
We will rendezvous in Athens, taking time to visit the famous Acropolis, the old town, the flea markets, and the Easter Parade. Then on to Crete. The Mediterranean's fifth largest island is shaped, appropriately, like the crown of King Minos: for it was on Crete more than 4,000 years ago that European culture first blossomed with the Minoan civilization.
Crete is a land of legends, mystery, and hidden treasure: Theseus and the Minotaur, the Trojan War, Homer's Iliad. Obviously Crete has plenty of history and historic locations, and yet it offers many other treasures for photography, as well. First there are the people: proud fishermen, goatherds, and farmers; and then there is the landscape: beaches, rolling hills, mountains, river gorges.
We will traverse the island, visiting remote fishing villages, historical sites, monasteries and antiquities. In Crete, our translator and guide will be able to take us to, and talk us through, special areas and help us gain access to images that would otherwise be unavailable. There will be plenty of time for photojournalism in the style of Cartier-Bresson or Constantine Manos' Greek Portfolio, one of my all-time favorite books!
