Amazingly, Portugal, one of the creators of the New World, one of the great powers of the 15th and 16th centuries, is practically a mystery. But its mystery, brought on by seclusion for much of the 20th century, has preserved many of the traditions and methods of the 19th century. And that, my friends, makes for some fantastic photographic opportunities. As we enter the 21st century there are few places left, particularly in Western Europe, which have not been homogenized into an indistinguishable EU. Portugal was not involved in the wars of the 20th century, so many of its great landmarks are unscarred. Portugal is only just now benefiting from the economic rebirth of Europe, so much of its agriculture and manufacturing is still manual.
This is a land of castles and wine and ships and farming and of warm, friendly people. If you always wished you'd been able to visit Tuscany before it was "discovered," before Under the Tuscan Sun, now you have your chance in Portugal. Rolling hills, vineyards, orchards, stone walls, castles on hilltops, a tradition of song and the home of "port" winethis is Portugal. Joe Englander will lead this tour from Lisbon up the coast to Obidos, and across the hills from Tomar to Elvora. The tour begins and ends in Lisbon.
