Clelia Belgrado, who leads this workshop, is fast becoming one of Italy's leading environmental portraitists. Having an Italian, native to the area where you will be working, is an unbelievable asset. She will help you explore how a photograph becomes personal, individual, and unique. How can you make it go deeper than the print surface and how can you make it come alive? How do you find a way of personally shaping the surrounding environment into a strong element in your portraits? How can you stop and "make" a photograph before actually taking it?
During this workshop you will try to find and free your own creative world. With most of the emphasis on natural light portraiture, this workshop is for everyone who wants to explore and extend their vision, expand their creative eye, and discover new ways of seeing through their heart and the imagination.
As Clelia says, "You will be 'making' photographs of each other, of professional models, and of normal people in their everyday environment. Through a series of demonstrations and shooting exercises, critique of participants' work and group discussions, I will try to help each photographer become personal andpuorquoi no, why notprovocative in their way of approaching people with a camera. We will work in B&W or color, all formats are welcome, but this is not the place for beginner photographers. There won't be time to learn to operate cameras because we will be learning to operate our minds, hearts, and souls."
All this will take place on the border between two regions of ItalyLiguria and Toscanain the towns of Sarzana and Ameglia, their surrounding villages and archaeological sites. The old fortress of Sarzana, the old and narrow streets of Ameglia, Vezzano Ligure, Ortonovo, the markets and small shops, the beach at Punta Corvo, the archaeological remains of Luni (117 B.C.) and necropolis of Cafraggio (500 B.C.) will become natural backdrops for your images. Other sights include the Medici Citadel (stronghold) built where the Firmafede Fortress once stood in the year 963, the Fortress of Sarzanello as it was in the 1400s, the Romanesque church of St. Andrea, the other churches of St. Maria and St Francesco, all built during the 13th century and restored during the 14th and 15th centuries, the Capuchin Convent (16th century), the various ancient palaces and the town hall (16th century).
We will be housed in an Agriturismo estate, situated just outside Ameglia, in single-room accommodations, each with bathroom. Breakfast is included. The Agriturismo has a great meeting room that will serve as an excellent discussion, viewing, and slide projection area. For those who may wish to stay longer, arrangements can be made on request.
