The Big Bend of the Rio Grande River (or Rio Bravo, as some know it) in Texas is deep in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert. From the heights of the Chisos Mountains to the deep gorges carved out of solid rock by the Rio Grande, we will be photographing the rugged natural beauty of this large national park at what is typically the peak of the spring desert wildflower season. Rare plants and extraordinary landscapes will be our subjects, and we certainly won’t refuse to photograph wildlife if we are fortunate enough to see it. We will be up before sunrise and shoot until sunset, so bring lots of film and/or digital memory cards. We will be traveling some of the time on rugged, unmaintained, 4WD, high-clearance roads — visiting locations that only a lucky few ever get to see.
We have tailored this workshop to be RV-friendly. Our lodging will be just outside Big Bend National Park’s west entrance in the small town of Study (stoo-dee) Butte, which offers a large RV campground with hookups as well as a motel.
