Cambodia has moved from being a dangerous location to being "the place to go"; it is considered by many to be the absolute highlight of a trip to Southeast Asia. Tourism has absolutely taken off in this small country, not only due to the great monuments, but mostly because of the genuine warmth of the local people.
The remains of the Khmer empire are most notably seen in the fabled and fabulous temples at Angkor. Surrounded by dense forests, the Angkor complex is absolutely stunning. You will never forget your first sight of Angkor Wat, only one of the many monuments in the Angkor Complex. Built between the 9th and 13th centuries, the temples certainly constitute one of the world's most extraordinary architectural achievements. On many top ten lists, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Our base will be the small town of Siem Reap, where we will decompress from jet-lag and spend our nights in a traditional style luxury hotel. During the days, we'll visit the many, many shrines and times of the "lost city" of Angkor, and even have time to visit the local market, art schools, and silk farms. Two of the most significant temples are Bayon, facing east, and Angkor Wat, facing west and beautifully silhouetted at sunrise. Others that we'll visit include: Banteay Srey and Banteay Samre, Baray and Western Bebon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Kde, Takeo, Thommanon, and Chau Say Tevoda.
Most tours only spend a couple of days in the complex. We will take a leisurely enough pace to make good photographs, but even after a week you may feel there still wasn't enough time. It is that good!
